Wright brother (Orville and Wilbur Wright) invented and built the first maned airplane that has successfully flown. Apparently it was a toy “helicoptor” they had when they were younger that sparked their interest in flying.

From what I could gather from the Wiki page (I might have missed stuff.. I’m not too familar with this area and it seems like an interesting and long journey):

They did it by a lot of studying, practicing and experimenting. They believed that gliders are the key to flight, but as some gliders at the time were killed in accidents, they looked into establishing a reliable method of control. They studied designs of previous inventors, looked at how birds fly, did their own experiments on kites/glider flights to challenge the coefficient of air pressure that was traditionally accepted at the time, carried out tests using small homebuilt wind-tunnel (testing different miniature wings/airfoil shapes and propellers), asked their shop mechanic to make a specialised lightweight engine, and trained themselves in a lot of glider flight so they can get a better control of the aircraft. After much testing/improving of their model, eventually their plane took off in 1903.
